Government Jobs for Military Spouses
If you have a desire to make a significant difference in someone’s life, but you need the flexibility of a contract job, consider a contract assignment in a government facility with Premier Medical Staffing Services. You can provide care to Veterans and others who may need more support than an average patient.
The length of the contract varies. Most are three months with an option for extension depending on the need of the facility and quality of healthcare professional. What’s the credentialing process when working in a government facility? Most do not involve getting a new state license. Healthcare professionals need an unrestricted license and at least 1 year of experience. They do require very thorough background checks and security clearances.
Types of government facilities with job opportunities:
- Veteran’s Affairs (VA) facilities, including hospitals and clinics
- Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities
- Facilities under jurisdiction of federal or state bureaus of corrections
- Other state facilities, such as behavioral health hospitals
Military Spouse License Portability
When a Military Spouse is in a profession that requires a certificate or license in that U.S. State, a move to that state may require many hurdles before starting a new job. Steps to obtain a new certificate or license in that state may include locating and completing the application, background checks, payment of fees, test taking, and more. That may cause a delay in getting a job if you’re not aware of the steps or have the time to plan ahead before your next move. This process can be frustrating for Military Spouses especially if the move is only for 2 or 3 years. What to do?
Many U.S. States are offering alternative forms of licensing to assist Military Spouses to hopefully reduce the burden of moving. Types of alternative forms of licensing:
- Licensure by Endorsement – The U.S. State licensing body issues a license to a professional because a professional license from a state with similar requirements for the profession is already possessed. View more information on Licensure Endorsement for Nurses from a sample of states:
- Military Spouse License Recognition – Tips on career specific state licenses, license reciprocity, reimbursing license costs, and license board support can be found on this link with the U.S. Department of Labor.
- Temporary or Provisional Licensing – Ability to obtain a temporary license to practice a profession while they meet the additional licensing requirements for that state. Generally good for 3 to 12 months.
- Tip: If your home state is part of the eNLC, file for compact status with your home state. Potential savings if you do this.
- Expedited Licensing – Applications for professional licenses may receive high priority and a shortened review period based on certain conditions such as if the license from another state meets similar requirements

Physical Therapy Compact
In April 2017, the Physical Therapy Compact became officially enacted. This allows eligible licensed Physical Therapists to practice and licensed Physical Therapist Assistants to work in a Compact member state, other than their home state, without going through the usual process for licensure in the remote state. If you meet all eligibility requirements, a PT or PTA can purchase a Compact Privilege in a Compact member state and, in most cases, start practicing physical therapy in the other state almost immediately.
