Women’s History Month: A Celebration

by Premier Medical Staffing Services on March 3, 2021 in Career Development

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan, at the request of the National Women’s History Project and Congress, designated March as Women’s History Month. Since that historic occasion 34 years ago, each March has been set apart to “reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to United States history” (History.com).

In keeping with the spirit of the month and as a certified Women’s Business Enterprise, we thought it would be appropriate to ask our employees a series of questions about the women that have played a significant role in their lives. Below are some of their answers.

Who has been the most influential woman in your life and why?

“My mother has been the most influential woman in my life. She is strong, confident and very intelligent. She taught me what it means to work hard and enjoy life. She taught me how important it is to have a strong support system of female friends and how wonderful life can be with great girlfriends.” – Brianna H.

My mom has been the most influential woman in my life. She has taught me so many important lessons about responsibility and I get my work ethic from her. She has been an LPN for almost 30 years and loves helping others. She inspires me to be a better person and to be a caring person.” – Sarah K.

My mother. She was a single mom of three while we were growing up and worked 2-3 jobs at a time to support us. She taught me to stay strong, stay independent and always fight for what I want out of life.” – Amy S.

Who is your favorite female historical figure and what do you admire about her?

“Florence Nightingale. She is my favorite historical female figure because of the strong influence she had on the nursing profession. Her dedication to taking care of wounded soldiers influenced the first scientifically based nursing school in London.” – Laura H.

Princess Diana. I admire her for her extensive charity work throughout her time with various children’s hospitals, drug addiction centers, elderly homes and her work with HIV/AIDS foundations. She was not afraid to support charities, that at the time, were not supported by all. She was a very courageous and generous woman.” – Sarah K.

“Oprah Winfrey. She is such a strong person who has made an incredible impact in her community and for other businesses.” – Rich Z.

What does the word “feminism” mean to you?

“When I think of ‘feminism,’ I think it means to fight for women’s equality in the world. But it really means fighting for everyone’s rights and equality for all.” – Leigh T.

“Equality and empowerment. I believe that we should all have equal ability to pursue our dreams. I also believe there are some situations that men excel at and some where women excel. To me that was God’s plan and why we were both created. We need each other to survive.” – Laura H.

Equality for women paralleled to the treatment that men get.” – Brandon B.

What piece of advice would you give to young girls today?

“Believe in yourself. You are stronger and more powerful than you think. Never give up on your goals. You can accomplish whatever you choose to work hard for.” – Lauren H.

“I think the best piece of advice that I could give to young girls today would be to stay true to yourself. Don’t change to meet anyone else’s expectations. You’re eventually going to find your tribe and when you do it will be glorious.” – Katy K.

“Be confident in your abilities. Try not to compare yourself to others and don’t let doubt hold you back from chasing your dreams.” – Amanda P.

List a woman alive today that you think will be influential for future generations. Tell us why you chose her.

“Sara Blakely is someone that I admire. She is the founder of Spanx. She was selling fax machines door-to-door and realized an opportunity for women and ran with it! She had no money and had to save up every penny she earned. She ran into several obstacles and had to figure out how to sell the product she developed. She is an inspiration to young women to strive to find your passion and overcome any obstacles in your way. She was in Forbes magazine as the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world.” – Kelly F.

“Greta Thunberg. She is bringing awareness to the climate crisis which will greatly affect all future generations in one way or another.” – Brian H.

“Laura Hanoski because she is giving back to our veterans, showing them there is hope and that we love them and appreciate them.” – Lauren H.

What is the most important lesson that you have learned from the women in your life?

“I think the most important lesson that I have learned from the women is my life is to be gentle with myself. As women, we can be tough on ourselves, tougher than anyone else is. The women in my life show me that I’m doing better than I think I am and that’s pretty uplifting and empowering.” – Katy K.

Keep an open mind; it will make everything work out better.” – Rich Z.

“Treat everyone the way you wish to be treated.” – Brandon B.

“Be confident and believe in yourself. Know that you are important and amazing in your own way.” – Brianna H.

“Feminism isn’t about making women stronger. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.”
